About Our Timber

What to Expect from Natural Timber Products

Natural timber is strong, durable, and built to last — but as with any natural material, you may notice small changes over time. These are normal characteristics of wood and do not affect the quality or safety of your product.

Timber Checks & Cracks

It’s common for natural timber to develop small surface cracks as it ages. This isn’t a sign of poor quality — it’s simply how wood naturally responds to changes in moisture and temperature.

Why Does Wood Shrink?

Wood shrinks as it dries out and loses moisture, particularly in the first few months after seasoning or

during shifts in weather conditions. This gradual contraction is part of the natural settling process.

Does This Affect Quality?

No. Minor surface cracks do not reduce the strength or durability of your product. They are purely cosmetic, provided they remain small and do not run through the full thickness of the timber.

How Long Does Timber Take to Dry?

Seasoned timber is already dried, but newly treated or unseasoned wood may continue to dry and settle for several months. During this time, slight movement or small cracks may appear, without compromising the overall strength of the frame.

Is It Unsafe?

Not at all. These small, natural changes are perfectly normal and safe. If a crack ever appears deep, wide, or runs right through a load-bearing section, we recommend getting it checked to ensure the structure remains sound.

When Should You Be Concerned?

Cracks only become an issue if they affect the stability of the product. If you notice one that looks significant, contact us or a professional for advice.

Little Tacker Toys Maintenance

Why Maintain Timber Products?

Timber is a natural material that needs regular care to preserve its strength and appearance. By checking your play equipment regularly, you can help prevent accidents, protect its structure, and ensure your family enjoys it safely for many years to come.

What Should You Do?

To keep your timber play equipment in top condition, we recommend:

  • Regular Cleaning: Remove dirt and moisture buildup.

  • Protective Coating: Apply timber oil or sealant every 12 months to guard against weather damage and wear.

  • Moisture Control: Try to keep timber free from prolonged moisture exposure, as this can cause warping.

  • Safety Checks: Inspect for loose bolts, cracks, or deterioration—especially after heavy play.

Can You Modify Products?

You’re welcome to customise your Little Tacker Toys timber products, but please note that alterations may affect compliance with Australian Safety Standards. For your child’s safety, we recommend consulting with us before making any changes to ensure the equipment remains safe and compliant.
